It has been hypothesized that force can be transmitted between adjacent muscles. Intermuscle force transmission violates the assumption that muscles act in mechanical isolation, and implies that predictions from biomechanical models are in error due to mechanical interactions between muscles, but the functional relevance of intermuscle force transmission is unclear. To investigate intermuscle force transmission between human flexor pollicis longus and the index finger part of flexor digitorum profundus, we compared finger flexion force produced by passive thumb flexion after one of three conditioning protocols: passive thumb flexion-extension cycling, thumb flexion maximal voluntary contraction MVCand thumb extension stretch.

Most of the various left- and right-hand rules arise from the fact that the three axes of three-dimensional space have two possible orientations. One can see this by holding one's hands outward and together, palms up, with the fingers curled, and the thumb out-stretched. If the curl of the fingers represents a movement from the first or x -axis to the second or y -axis, then the third or z -axis can point along either thumb.

Sensorimotor Impairment in the Elderly pp Cite as. Older women were less accurate and required more time in tracing a triangle template by controlling the force on spring levers with three different finger combinations: a one-hand precision pinching movement, a bilateral index finger movement, and a left index finger and right thumb combination. Older subjects were disproportionately less accurate than young subjects when required to decouple the pinching movement and control the index finger and thumb independently. Effects of practice were similar for both age groups, except that the elderly increased behavioral speed more from the first to the second day of practice.

This study investigated the directional coordination of force vectors generated by the thumb and index finger during precision pinch.
